Which Leaven are you Spreadin’? (3min)
Article by Jerame Nelson
Why are politics, entertainment, and worship such hot topics in the news right now? I believe this is what Jesus was talking about when He warned us of the leaven of Herod, Pharisees and Sadducees. But while the darkness spreads like leaven, so does God’s Kingdom. A speck of His glory can dispel the darkness. Here are three leavens from the Word:
“Be careful,” Jesus warned them. “Watch out for the yeast of the Pharisees and that of Herod.” They discussed this with one another and said, “It is because we have no bread.” Mark 8:15-16 NIV
The Leaven of the Pharisees
The Pharisee’s leaven is a religious spirit. Its assignment is to stop people from seeing and hearing in the spirit. The religious spirit does everything in its power to hinder God’s people from intimacy with God. It questions and criticizes, “I don’t know about that healing stuff, those dreams, and visions and the prophetic!” Have you heard this? The spirit of the Pharisees is on the move to stop and block what God wants to activate and release to us. It tries to keep us from going deep in the things of God.
“Woe to you experts in the law, because you have taken away the key to knowledge. You yourselves have not entered, and you have hindered those who were entering.” Luke 11:52 NIV
If you are operating in the religious spirit, you begin to stop people from the supernatural because you are not willing to step into the supernatural yourself. Get rid of this leaven and continue to believe God. He has great supernatural things in store for you and your family!
“However, as it is written: “What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived”—the things God has prepared for those who love him—” 1 Corinthians 2:9 NIV
The Leaven of Herod
Herod was famous for cutting off the head of John the Baptist. As a result, when Jesus came to His palace, Herod was the only man that Jesus never said a word to. John the Baptist represents repentance. When you cut off repentance, Jesus has nothing to say to you. The leaven of Herod is a political spirit. Its goal is to cause the church to compromise its values. In this spirit, people begin to forget who they are and Whose they are. They bow to the pressure of what the world tells them to do.
Herod’s leaven is coupled with the entertainment spirit. It was Herodius’ daughter who did a dance that pleased the king. This was the act that lead to the death of John the Baptist. There are too many people paying attention to media, entertainment and political agendas today. Don’t let this leaven cut off the things of God in your life.
The Leaven of the Kingdom
The leaven of the Kingdom is the voice of God, the supernatural and the miracles of God. This is His desire for you! He wants encounters with you. When you are filled with the leaven of the Kingdom you are influenced with the Word of God and the voice of Heaven more than you are influenced by the things of this world. I encourage you to get in the Word, listen to the Holy Ghost and follow with the Spirit says.
Keep It Simple…
Connect with Holy Spirit and ask Him to cleanse you of the leaven of the Pharisees or Herod, if there has been any mixed into your worldview. Then, invite the Leaven of the Kingdom into your life by intentionally making time to know the Word and grow in your relationship with the Holy Spirit. Watch the leaven of the Kingdom of God begin to rise in your life and spread to those around you. When you are spreading the leaven of Heaven, you are primed for fresh encounters with Jesus!
