What is the Glory of God? (5min)

Article by Jerame Nelson

The glory of God is not a buzzword, a mystical force, a goosebump or a tickle you get when you’re worshipping.

The glory of God is the personhood of God.

Paul talks about the glory in three different ways: the Father of Glory, the spirit of glory and Jesus Christ, the Hope of Glory!

“For this reason I too, having heard of the faith in the Lord Jesus which exists among you and your love for all the saints, do not cease giving thanks for you, while making mention of you in my prayers; that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Him. I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you will know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints,” Ephesians 1:15-18 NASB

When people are asking for the glory, they’re asking to encounter the personhood of who God is, made manifest to us by His Spirit.

Moses time and time again chose the glory of God. He esteemed the riches of Christ greater than the pleasures of sin and things of this world.

By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be known as the son of Pharaoh’s daughter. He chose to be mistreated along with the people of God rather than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. He regarded disgrace for the sake of Christ as of greater value than the treasures of Egypt, because he was looking ahead to his reward.” Hebrews 11:24-26 NIV

Moses was the one who walked away from the palace and the courts of Pharaoh. Even in Egypt, he defended a Hebrew. When God raised up Moses, He caused him to be a deliverer. Moses knew what His reward was. Moses chose the glory.

“Then Moses said to him, “If your Presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here.” Exodus 33:15 NIV

In the Old Testament, there were two manifestations of the glory: Chabad and Shekinah.

The Chabad glory is the weight of His Presence.

“When the priests withdrew from the Holy Place, the cloud filled the temple of the Lord. And the priests could not perform their service because of the cloud, for the glory of the Lord filled his temple.” 1 Kings 8:10-11 NIV

The Shekinah glory is the visible splendor of God. Signs, wonders and miracles happen in the Shekinah glory.

“Now the cherubim were standing on the south side of the temple when the man went in, and a cloud filled the inner court. Then the glory of the Lord rose from above the cherubim and moved to the threshold of the temple. The cloud filled the temple, and the court was full of the radiance of the glory of the Lord. The sound of the wings of the cherubim could be heard as far away as the outer court, like the voice of God Almighty when he speaks.” Ezekiel 10:3-5 NIV

Both of these manifestations were experienced in the Old Testament, yet people didn’t have God on the inside.

Check out Haggai 2:9 NASB:

“The latter glory of this house will be greater than the former,’ says the Lord of armies, ‘and in this place I will give peace,’ declares the Lord of armies.”

The former glory includes all of the supernatural occurrences from the law of Moses until John the Baptist. Jesus participated in both the former and latter glory while He was on the Earth. When Jesus rose from the dead, He ushered in the latter glory of God.

Do you want to know the sign that God gave John the Baptist? John the Baptist knew that the Messiah would be the One whom the Holy Spirit rested upon. When Jesus was baptized, John saw the Holy Spirit descend like a dove upon Him in Luke 3. Not only did the Spirit descend, the glory remained.

Invite the glory into your life. Choose His Presence like Moses did. “Holy Spirit, You are precious to me. I want You to remain in my life— in the life of an entire generation.” That is the latter glory!
