4 Keys to Get God's Attention (3min)
Article by Jerame Nelson
In Exodus 3:1-5, God gives us four keys on how to get His attention. Moses was known as a friend of God. He was one who encountered God and walked with Him. This is the very beginning of Moses’ journey with God, the start of when God reveals Himself to His friend, Moses:
Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian, and he led the flock to the far side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. There the angel of the Lord appeared to him in flames of fire from within a bush. Moses saw that though the bush was on fire it did not burn up. So Moses thought, “I will go over and see this strange sight—why the bush does not burn up.” When the Lord saw that he had gone over to look, God called to him from within the bush, “Moses! Moses!” And Moses said, “Here I am.” “Do not come any closer,” God said. “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground. Exodus 3:1-5
Key 1: We need a childlike heart.
Most people don’t hear God’s voice or encounter supernatural things because they approach the things of God with the natural mind. We need a childlike heart to receive the supernatural. Moses turned aside because He was fascinated with the burning bush. He was filled with childlike wonder.
Key 2: Pay attention to the little things.
Moses turned aside to look and see why the bush was burning. It wasn’t unusual in that day for shepherds to see bush fires. Moses paid attention when he noticed that the bush was burning but did not go out. When you are at home or church or see miracles or something supernatural, have you become familiar with it or do you embrace what God is doing? Do you turn aside to see what is on God’s heart? When Moses looks at the bush and notices something different, He gets God’s attention and God speaks to Him. This begins the adventure of God transforming Moses from a fearful coward into a mighty deliverer. From this place, God starts to deal with fears and strongholds that would have held him back.
Key 3: Honor His Presence.
“Do not come any closer,” God said. “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.” Exodus 3:5
If you want to receive from God and develop friendship with Him in the Spirit, it starts with the fear of the Lord. This means honoring God in a worshipful awe of Him.
I believe the fear of God is that you have fallen so madly in love with Jesus, you have looked in His Word and His Spirit and you have decided: I will not compromise. I love my King too much that I will not hurt His heart by doing the things that would hurt Him. That is what it’s like to take off your shoes and to bow down before Him.
God’s not looking for a moment, He’s looking for your whole life. He is looking for you to give Him everything.
Key 4: Develop Friendship with God.
Take the time to spend time with Him. Read His word. Pray. Meditate on the Word. When you are with your friends and you feel the wooing of God’s presence, turn aside. “Hey guys, you go to the movies, I feel like I need to spend time with the Lord.” Turn aside and be with Him. Release your hunger towards Him as He woos you. Hunger is the currency of Heaven. When you become hungry for God, He will reveal Himself to you. You will begin to hear the Lord say “Come Be with Me,” “Come away with Me.” When you do, He will reveal Himself to you and show you your destiny.
Keep It Simple:
If you want to get God’s attention, develop friendship with Him by turning aside when He woos you. Pay attention to the details He is showing you. Become childlike to receive and honor His presence in the fear of the Lord. When you do these things, God will reveal Himself to you.
